The Water Problem

THE WATER PROBLEM

Water should theoretically be simple.

Water is not simple.

Water is:

  • temperature sensitive
  • mineral sensitive
  • texture sensitive
  • container sensitive
  • smell sensitive
  • ice sensitive

Some water tastes:

  • metallic
  • dusty
  • swampy
  • chemically
  • stale
  • thick somehow
  • spiritually wrong

And because hydration is mandatory, people often feel enormous shame around struggling with water despite the fact that different waters genuinely taste radically different.

People have favorite waters for a reason.

Some people can only tolerate:

  • ice cold water
  • room temperature water
  • filtered water
  • sparkling water
  • water from one exact emotional support tumbler
  • water through a straw
  • water without a straw
  • bottled water only
  • crunchy gas station ice water specifically at 1 AM

The body develops rituals around hydration.

The emotional support water bottle becomes:

  • companion
  • grounding object
  • portable nervous system regulation device
  • proof of preparedness
  • tiny plastic canteen against despair

And then somebody loses the water bottle and suddenly the entire day collapses structurally.

Devastating.
